School building committee advances community outreach as referendum approaches

The Willington School Building Committee and board members told residents July 14 that community outreach is ramping up as the district narrows options for a building referendum.
TechCon, the district’s architectural and engineering firm, presented options at a July 23 community event and will answer postcards and online questions the firm collected. The committee plans additional in‑person events and a “rank‑order” polling exercise to gauge community preferences; officials stressed the polling is meant to guide the SBC toward a single option for the referendum, not to select the final ballot language.
Board members said the referendum will likely present a single yes/no question on a preferred project, per guidance from bonding reviewers and state reviewers. The board discussed doing a follow‑up community presentation in August once financial numbers and option costs are clearer. The SBC is conducting due diligence on three parcels of land behind Route 32 and will not advance land purchases until voters approve a project.
The board and SBC emphasized they will provide clearer cost comparisons between “break and fix” repairs to two existing schools and construction of a new consolidated school, and that more detailed financial figures will be available in coming community sessions.
