Students, musicals and community programs highlighted at Nettle Creek board meeting

Trustees celebrated student achievements — finalists in the Wayne County Civics Bee, SAT and iLearn assessment wins, a successful spring musical and new community supports such as an outdoor food pantry and a fundraising golf event.
Trustees at the Nettle Creek School Corporation meeting on Tuesday celebrated a string of student and community successes, from a regional civics competition to strong assessment scores and the return of school theater.
Superintendent (S4) introduced seven Hagerstown Junior High finalists for the Wayne County Civics Bee and asked each to describe their essay topics and solutions; students’ topics included nursing shortages, underage drinking while driving, motor vehicle safety and mental-health access. “Tonight, we're honoring students with the Wayne County civics bid,” she said when introducing the program. The board heard that the weekend musical drew about 570 attendees and raised more than $5,000 from tickets and candy-gram sales; presenters and board members praised student poise and volunteer support when a Saturday performance was delayed by a power outage. Assessment updates included SAT results presented by Mrs. Tinkle (S6): 39% of juniors met or exceeded the College Board total benchmark (1,010), and 66% met or exceeded the reading and writing benchmark (480). The district exceeded the state average in reading and writing and tied the state average in math. Officials also reported the first administration of the PSAT 8/9 to freshmen and upcoming iLearn summative testing for grades 3–8. (Mrs. Tinkle, SEG 1038–1046; SEG 1050–1060.)
Superintendent (S4) also highlighted community efforts: a volunteer-built outdoor food pantry at Hagerstown Junior-Senior High (north side, Door 2) and a Nettle Creek golf fundraiser scheduled for April 26 at Winding Branch Golf Course to support staff recognition and end-of-year celebrations. The board approved routine donations and memorial gifts during the meeting, and trustees were thanked for recognizing student accomplishments and volunteer support. The board set its next meeting for May 13 in the LGI Room at 6:30 p.m.
