Hamilton K-12 Schools has implemented a new cell-phone policy that requires students to store phones away during class, Principal Miss Pendero told trustees.
Under the policy students may not have phones on their person during class time and are expected to place them in a classroom caddy, backpack, locker or car. Staff may confiscate phones if students are carrying them in hallways or have them visible during class. Miss Pendero said she has confiscated ten phones so far and calls parents on the first offense; phones are returned at the end of the day, and repeat offenses require a parent or guardian to collect the device.
Trustees thanked staff and noted positive early feedback from teachers and some parents. Administrators said the policy aims to reduce in-class distractions and support instructional time as the district adjusts to the new procedure.
The board did not take a separate vote on the policy in this session; staff reported they will monitor implementation and update trustees if revisions are needed.
