An external coach advised focusing less on numeric scores and more on concrete board behaviors that support student achievement. The coach suggested piloting simple two-way outreach, using paired board members for community visits, and ensuring all community input is collected consistently and returned to the full board for consideration. "Instead of focusing on the score, let's look at the behaviors — what boxes are checked," the coach said.
The board discussed forming a small, ad hoc committee of two board members to develop a draft community-engagement plan and return recommendations by September, while noting the option to continue hybrid coaching with existing supports or adopt the Students 1st governance tools provided through DPI or the School Boards Association.
By motion the board approved its quarterly self-evaluation and the time-tracker tool, and members asked staff to bring a recommended structure for the ad hoc committee and a timeline at the next meeting.
