Comfrey approves 2025 police contract, rehomes AED and raises fire-relief pension

The Comfrey City Council on Dec. 10 approved the police services contract for 2025 at a rate of $83.55 per contract hour for 10 hours per week. Council Member Arnsdorf moved to approve the contract; Council Member Evers seconded the motion and the minutes record it carried unanimously.
On police-related equipment and communications, the council approved letting the first responder department rehome an AED to a business in town (motion by Kastner, second by Redman). The council also voted to close the Verizon Wireless and Frontier accounts assigned to the Comfrey Police Department and discontinue those phone numbers after a year of the new contact information being available to the Sheriff’s Department (motion by Kastner, second by Arnsdorf).
The council approved appointments to public safety leadership for 2025: Jill Veerkamp was appointed First Responder Captain and Steve Berberich was appointed Fire Chief (motion by Arnsdorf, second by Kastner; carried unanimously). The minutes also record a $500 donation to each of the fire department and the first responders, accepted by resolution.
Clint Radtke, president of the Fire Relief Association, requested increasing the association’s pension by $100 per year of service, raising the pension to $900 per year of service. The council approved that increase effective Jan. 1, 2025 (motion by Evers, second by Redman). The minutes note the association has investments intended to support the increase and that the city would remain liable for any shortfall; Council Member Rick Kastner was recorded as abstaining on the pension vote.
The council’s action list shows routine staffing, equipment, and contract decisions intended to maintain local public safety services into 2025.
