Madison County committee rules landfill reopening unfeasible, seeks solar or industrial reuse

Chairman James W. Jewett and county staff concluded at the June 9 Madison County Economic Development Committee meeting that reopening the county landfill is not a viable option and directed staff to pursue alternative monetization strategies.

Madison County Administrator Jonathon Weakley reported on discussions with King George County and regulatory considerations around the landfill property and presented possible future uses, including solar energy projects and industrial development. After reviewing regulatory and feasibility constraints, Chairman James W. Jewett and Allen Nicholls, the county's Planning and Zoning Administrator, agreed not to pursue reopening the site.

Committee members framed next steps as pursuing options that would generate revenue without reopening the landfill. Weakley said staff will further explore solar and industrial-park uses and report back with proposals that address permitting and infrastructure needs. No formal motion to sell or rezone the property was recorded; the meeting record shows the committee agreed to shift planning efforts toward alternative development rather than landfill operations.

The committee did not set a formal timeline for decisions on property disposition and asked staff to return with refined concepts that quantify costs, potential revenue, and permitting pathways. The county will need to consider regulatory approvals and any conversations with neighboring jurisdictions as part of those proposals.
