Comfrey council approves permits, accepts donations and addresses local issues

At its Sept. 9 meeting the Comfrey City Council accepted memorial donations, approved gambling permits, authorized the sale of surplus tables, appointed a weather-spotter contact, and directed notice and enforcement steps concerning minors driving golf carts; the council also noted a wastewater solar contract remains under legal review.
The Comfrey City Council handled routine municipal business and several approvals at its Sept. 9 meeting.
Councilors accepted memorial donations to first responders, the fire department and the library and adopted the related resolution. A motion to approve the monthly bills for $45,471.62 passed, and the August financial report was approved.
The council approved gambling permits for St. Paul's Catholic Church (calendar raffle on Feb. 1, 2026) and for the Comfrey Fire Relief Association (Nov. 22, 2025). It also approved selling surplus tables to a Mountain Lake church for $85 each, with any remaining tables offered to the local school; the church council will advise Councilor Kastner whether it will accept the purchase.
S. Berberich reported the city's wastewater and related plant operations are running well, but he said the city's pumper truck needs repairs discovered during the required pump certification. City Attorney M. Muske said questions remain about the solar contract for the wastewater treatment plant and that he has reached out to MPCA for clarification.
The council discussed complaints about minors driving golf carts on city streets; council noted the city ordinance requires drivers be licensed and at least 16 and asked for a notice on utility bills and the city website to inform residents of the requirement.
Jason Peterson volunteered and was appointed as the local weather spotters coordinator; he will organize training and notify volunteers when called out by the county. The council adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
