Comfrey council approves preliminary 2026 budget and wage increases

The Comfrey City Council approved a preliminary 2026 budget and a set of wage increases at its Sept. 9 meeting.
Councilor Kastner moved to approve the preliminary budget and levy; Councilor Redman seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The preliminary budget lists general expenditures of $615,190 and anticipated general revenues of $289,162; the proposed total levy is $361,028, made up of $326,028 to the General Fund and $35,000 to the Capital Equipment Fund.
In the same discussion, the council completed its annual wage review and approved increases effective Jan. 1, 2026: maintenance/superintendent +$1.50 per hour; clerk-treasurer +$1.50 per hour; part-time maintenance +$0.50; library director and assistant +$0.50; custodians +$0.50; and snow plow operator +$0.50. Councilor Kastner moved the wage adjustments and Councilor Redman seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
Councilors did not record changes to revenue assumptions in the minutes beyond the preliminary figures. The council will proceed with the budget schedule and levy certification steps required by statute.
