The Comfrey City Council voted unanimously Sept. 9 to have the city pay the full premium for the Minnesota Paid Leave Law for its employees, including elected officials.
Councilor Redman moved the measure and Councilor Kastner seconded. Councilors said they reviewed options for how the premium could be paid; state rules allow employers to pass at most half the premium to employees or apply a minimum of 0.44% of current wages. Mayor Richter said many plan guidelines are still being finalized at the state level and that the city will need a local policy to outline how leave will be administered.
The council’s action covers enrollment in the state-offered insurance plan as a city-paid benefit. City Attorney M. Muske flagged outstanding questions for state agencies, and the council directed staff to draft a policy establishing the leave process once guidance is complete.
The vote was unanimous. The council noted the procedural next step is for staff to prepare the implementing policy and any forms required under the state program.
