At the July 13 meeting the Vermillion School District 13‑1 board discussed and granted permission to trial a homecoming‑day early dismissal and approved two additional professional learning time (PLT) half‑days for staff.
Administration proposed an early dismissal at 1:30 p.m. on homecoming day so students participating in the parade would not require lengthy school‑to‑parade transit; parents would be responsible for transportation for students who choose to attend the parade but do not participate. The board discussed transportation implications and the role of the Boys & Girls Club for care on early dismissal days. The superintendent said the district would “study this for a year and see if it's really what we want to do or if after we've done it we go, you know, we're missing something.”
The board also approved adding two PLT half‑days — Friday, Nov. 13 and Wednesday, Dec. 9 (1:30 p.m. dismissals) — to give staff time to implement the district’s new Building Assets Reducing Risks (B.A.R.R.) grant activities. Administration acknowledged additional PLT days can be a hardship for parents but said the time is needed for staff collaboration.
Administrators said graduation time changes (considering moving 2027 graduation to 10:30 or 11:00 a.m.) will be considered in future discussions with university scheduling and senior class input.
