The Lovington Municipal Schools Board of Education tabled consideration of a revised athletic activity handbook on July 16 after board members and staff identified multiple wording, eligibility and access-control issues that require more work.
During the new-business discussion, staff introduced the handbook as an update to changes requested in May. Board members questioned language on supervision (instances that read "6 through 12" that may need to read "7 through 12") and flagged inconsistent wording across the document. Members also pressed for clearer rules about which sixth graders are eligible for particular activities under NMAA rules and asked staff to remove or harmonize conflicting sentences.
The board spent substantial time on facility access language. Staff said the district is moving toward a key-card system to better control access, but the handbook still references issuing physical keys “only when necessary.” Members raised concerns about numerous booster-club keys in circulation and suggested the packet make explicit who is authorized to hold keys or cards and whether locks should be changed when responsibility is transferred.
On transportation and attendance rules, members questioned a phrase that requires written notification "prior to the event" for student release and recommended replacing specific weekday references ("Friday before a Saturday competition") with a clearer standard such as "the last school day before a non-school-day competition" to reflect the district's four-day calendar.
Given the number of small but substantive edits, the board moved to table the handbook and asked staff, including the athletic director, to produce a revised version for the August meeting. No final vote on handbook adoption occurred; tabling preserves the item for formal consideration after revisions.
