Residents press Tift County to expand animal shelter, cite vaccination and ventilation concerns

Several Tift County residents used the public-comment period on June 8 to press the Board of Commissioners to expand the county—s animal shelter and to raise concerns about the shelter—s conditions.

Holle Cook Abee, Michelle Powers, Shannon Davidson and Pam James asked the board to add an additional wing to the animal shelter. Candas Bennett told commissioners she is concerned about rabies vaccinations, lack of ventilation and the absence of air conditioning at the facility. Tina Clem urged the county to consider mandatory registration of all pets.

The board heard those public comments but did not record a specific operations response or a staff report addressing the claims during the meeting minutes. No staff motion or directive regarding immediate shelter expansion or remedial steps appears in the record.

Public commenters also raised other issues during the same public-comment block: Dr. Bonnie Baker asked the commission to explore regulations for data centers before proposals are submitted, and Chris Burchell asked that any consideration of a Local Homestead Option Sales Tax (LHOST) be placed on the November general-election ballot.
