Tift County to consider raising landfill and solid-waste tipping fees; contract renewal would raise household collection costs
Summary
County staff proposed raising the inert landfill tipping fee from $18 to $28 per ton and the municipal solid waste tipping fee from $42 to $47 per ton, effective Aug. 1, 2026; county officials said the change would increase the Golden Environmental household-can charge by $2 and raise the Pecan Street collection-site contract from $80,000 to $84,000.

Tift County Manager Jim Carter said at the Board of Commissioners' June 2 work session that county staff will present proposed increases to landfill tipping fees at the June 8 meeting, with both changes targeted to take effect Aug. 1, 2026.
Carter said the inert landfill tipping fee would move from $18 per ton to $28 per ton, and the municipal solid waste tipping fee would increase from $42 per ton to $47 per ton. He said staff provided a handout comparing Tift County's rates with those in surrounding counties.
Carter told the board that the proposed fee changes would affect the county's contract with Golden Environmental. He said the contractor will pass through an increase of $2 per household can (raising the current $17.90 rate by $2) and that the Pecan Street collection-site contract amount would rise from $80,000 to $84,000 annually under the new structure. The board was asked to decide the term of any contract renewal (one, three or five years) when the item returns on the Regular Agenda.
No vote was held at the work session; the board indicated it wanted the matter placed on the Regular Agenda for June 8. If approved on June 8, Carter said the fee changes would be effective Aug. 1, 2026. The work session record does not show whether the board discussed offsets for households or low-income rate relief.
The board also received related information on the FY27 Budget and Schedule of Fees at the work session; recreation fee changes were discussed separately and staff was asked to compare pool-entry fees in surrounding counties for further context.
What happens next: The fee resolutions (Resolution No. 2026-15 for the inert landfill fee and Resolution No. 2026-16 for municipal solid waste) are scheduled for the board's Regular Meeting agenda on June 8 for potential formal action.
