After a comprehensive policy audit completed with KSB Law, the Wall School District 51-5 board approved most policy updates but voted to table a new investment policy (3059) for further work. Policy committee members said the audit corrected statute citations and formatting; trustees asked staff and the committee to refine language on investments and signatory controls.
The meeting devoted substantial time to a proposed AI policy (policy 4063). Superintendent Sally urged caution, saying, “AI is only as good as the information you feed it,” and emphasized protecting student data and FERPA compliance. Board members and the tech coordinator discussed the district’s containerized option (Microsoft Copilot) for staff and limitations on student access. Trustees agreed staff should not rely solely on AI to grade student work or to serve as the sole instructor; the administration will put the operational details (tool approvals and tracking procedures) into the staff handbook and return final language to the board.
On investments, trustees expressed concern about delegation language that would let the business manager invest funds without separate board action. A motion to table policy 3059 passed; the rest of the policy packet was approved and will be posted on the website after edits.
The board also approved a set of corrections to health/safety and handbook policies including language changes related to lice (5023.3), alternate education placements and mandatory coach certification updates. The board directed staff to circulate handbook language in advance of final approval so trustees and the public can review operational procedures tied to policy changes.
