City Manager Albert Tripp told the Airway Heights City Council the city will issue a notice of termination to the West Central Community Center for the leased space used to provide WIC services and asked the council to authorize the action.
Tripp said the space downstairs has historically been leased for about $140 per month and that as the city has grown staff need additional space and staffing flexibility. “We have been working with WIC to identify other locations within the community that might be beneficial to include the hub, the Arrowheads Baptist Church,” Tripp said, and staff also provided cost estimates for rooms at the recreation center and are working with a realtor to find other options.
Why it matters: WIC provides federally funded maternal and child nutrition services; terminating the low‑cost lease signals the city is reallocating space in response to operational needs and growth while seeking to avoid service disruption by working with WIC on relocation options.
Council discussed the issue and had no further public comment. The council authorized issuance of the notice of termination; the motion passed with five yeas and one abstention. Tripp said staff will continue to work with WIC and local partners to identify and cost alternatives for service delivery.
