Staff and board members said the statutory board struggled to recruit officers and that a newly added administrative assistant in the township office provides capacity to manage parks programming without the formal requirements associated with a board. The change is intended to preserve opportunities for resident input on events and park improvements while reducing administrative burden on both volunteers and township staff.
Supporters argued the volunteer committee model still allows residents to submit ideas and help with events, but does not subject volunteers to the same Sunshine Act–style meeting requirements as a formal board. The board moved to adopt the repeal and the motion carried.
Board members said operational details — including whether the township will maintain parks social media accounts and how proposals for lighting or hours at John Atkinson Park will be processed — will be handled through staff and future public outreach rather than board formalities.
The repeal takes effect following codification of the change; staff said they will return with any needed implementing language and community notice about how residents can participate going forward.
