Reidsville adopts county transportation plan; council adds sidewalk extension to Walmart

Reidsville’s City Council voted to adopt the Rockingham County Comprehensive Transportation Plan after a presentation from NCDOT staff that outlined roadway modernization, intersection upgrades, transit expansion and bicycle/pedestrian projects affecting the city.
Emily Sefka, a transportation engineer with NCDOT, described the CTP’s purpose and timeline and said the plan identifies need-based, multimodal projects: “a CTP is a long range needs based plan ... it covers multimodal, transportation needs such as highways, bikes, pedestrians, public transit, rail, airports,” she told the council. Devin Jones, an HBCU fellow working with NCDOT, and other staff walked council through specific recommendations for Reidsville, including modernization of US 29 Business, widening and intersection work on NC 87 and NC 14, and two targeted intersection improvements on Richardson Drive.
Among the Reidsville-specific recommendations were transit proposals: Sefka said one recommendation is “to add a fixed route bus service from Reidsville to Greensboro along US 29,” and the plan also recommends expanding county services to better connect towns such as Madison, Wentworth, Eden and others. Bicycle and pedestrian recommendations included sidewalk infill within Reidsville and multiuse trail connections to area lakes and neighboring towns.
Councilmembers raised specific local concerns during Q&A, notably a missing sidewalk segment over the bridge on Freeway Drive leading to Walmart. Councilman Coates requested adding continuation of the sidewalk to Walmart; after discussion a council member moved to approve the CTP with that sidewalk addition explicitly included. The motion was seconded and approved by council vote.
City and NCDOT staff said plan recommendations are planning-level; projects will require later project development, right-of-way acquisition and funding commitments. Council asked staff to pursue the sidewalk follow-up and to return with feasibility details if NCDOT or project delivery constraints make the segment infeasible.
