Bisbee council approves $8,043 purchase of Bluetooth helmet kits for police motorcycles

The Bisbee Mayor and Council unanimously approved a one-time $8,043 purchase on June 23 for wireless Bluetooth helmet communication kits to be used by the Police Department’s motorcycle units.
Police Chief Tim Cox, who presented the request, said the purchase represents the final phase of the department’s radio communication upgrades. "The equipment will allow the department’s motorcycle units to operate using Bluetooth-connected helmet communication systems linked to officers’ portable radios," Cox said, adding the kits will ensure compatibility with a new radio system scheduled for implementation in July 2026. Funding for the purchase will come from the city’s approved Capital Expenditures budget.
The purchase was introduced by Mayor Ken Budge and discussed briefly by councilmembers, who asked for details about the number of motorcycles and how the equipment would be used. Chief Cox said the department currently has two motorcycles and that the units are primarily used for traffic enforcement, DUI enforcement, escort duties and assignments related to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety program.
Councilmember Anna Cline moved to approve the purchase, and Councilmember Pete Skinner seconded. The motion passed unanimously. The council adjourned at 5:10 p.m.
The approved equipment purchase is intended to complete the department’s radio upgrades ahead of the new system rollout in July 2026; the council did not set additional conditions or requests for follow-up in the meeting record.
