Windy Hills highlights Arbor Day, new tree on the Green and Glow on the Green plans

Council members used the Oct. 14 meeting to recap recent and upcoming community events centered on the Green and tree stewardship.
Councilwoman Kate Greer, the city’s Green and Tree Board liaison, reported that Arbor Day on Oct. 6 drew about 35 attendees and that Mayor Dr. John Roberts gave a short speech. Greer said Caroline Westfall, the city arborist (and identified in the record as Mayor of nearby Druid Hills), located a Big Leaf Magnolia at Wilson’s Nursery in Frankfort; Westfall and her husband planned to retrieve it and keep it at her house until November planting conditions are favorable. Greer said she would try to get Adam Schneider to plant the tree.
Greer also said three residents — Josh Ashley (a certified arborist), Alan Bonderhagan and Martin Spickard — expressed interest in joining the Tree Board. Sav-A-Tree will provide two trees for the price of one, and the Klausing Group will be planting fall decorative plants at the Rudy Lane & Brownsboro Road signature entrance. The council reported that one spotlight fixture on the Rudy the Bear statue and an electrical plug on the east side of the Green were damaged and that an electrician would be engaged to repair them.
The council announced Glow on the Green, scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 1, with arrival at 5:30 p.m. and the tree lighting at 6 p.m.; an accordion player has been contacted. The mayor thanked neighbor Sally Johnson for allowing use of an extension cord during Arbor Day when City power was interrupted by nearby pipeline construction.
Staff will proceed with planting schedules and coordinating Tree Board appointments; details including planting dates and volunteer assignments will be reported to the council when confirmed.
