Commissioners consider one-week yard-waste extension after low participation and weather delays

The Chair presented a four-week tally of yard-waste collections to explain citizen concerns and low participation rates. The counts provided were: 44 households on Nov. 24, 57 households on Dec. 8 (44 of those were carryovers from Nov. 24), 9 households on Dec. 22 and 12 households on Jan. 5. The Chair said those numbers equate to small percentages of total households eligible for pickup and attributed much of the variation to an "Indian summer" that delayed leaf drop.
"We had 44 households of the 574 that we have for picking up waste container waste, which is 7.67%," the Chair said while presenting the tracking sheet. The Chair and other commissioners discussed whether to request one additional week of pickup in November (through Thanksgiving) to better capture leaves. One commissioner noted cost concerns, saying, "So when you're talking about $2,300 per week or per month, you have to really think about it."
Commissioners acknowledged the unpredictability of weather and the small turnout in winter pickups. Several members said they did not want to waste money on an extended program but that keeping the option on the table would be reasonable for future consideration. No formal motion was made during this discussion to change the service schedule.
The Chair offered to provide copies of the counts to any commissioner or resident who requested them and said staff would reconsider the schedule for next season if warranted by participation and budget constraints.
