Liberty board declines to adopt override argument; staff to redraft pro statement

The Liberty Elementary board continued work on a pro argument for a proposed special maintenance and operations override but declined to adopt a resolution approving the statement at the July 14 meeting.
Administrative counsel presented a draft pro statement intended for use if the board places an override before voters. Board members suggested edits to emphasize academics, to highlight maintenance of specials such as art and physical education, and to make concise claims about keeping local tax dollars local. President Schmidt and others urged the text be tightened to fit the 200‑word limit for an official argument while clearly explaining that a yes vote would continue existing support for programs the district and community value.
Board members also raised procedural objections: one member said he could not support the motion because he had been absent for the earlier vote that authorized bringing the override forward and wanted additional discussion; another said the resolution referenced an exhibit (the pro statement) that had not yet been finalized. Following discussion, a motion to adopt a resolution approving the board's pro argument failed on a 0–4 vote. Administration agreed to produce a revised draft that incorporates the board's edits and circulate it to members ahead of the next meeting for possible approval.
