Election board clears Waianae school safety referendum for November ballot

The Elkhart County Election Board voted July 15 to place a school-safety referendum for the Waianae Community School Corporation on the November 2026 general-election ballot.
Board members reviewed wording certified by the state’s Department of Local Government and Finance and approved the county-level step required to print the public question. The packet read, in part: "Shall the Waianae Community School Corporation increase property taxes paid to the school corporation for no more than 8 years for the purpose of funding improvements for the safety, security, and well‑being of Waianae students by imposing a property tax rate that does not exceed 10¢ and results in the maximum annual amount that does not exceed $1,000,757,150,000 dollars" (language as provided in the board packet).
Staff explained the packet also included an estimate that, for a median home value of $250,000, the annual property-tax bill would rise by about $114 if the question passes. The board moved, seconded and unanimously approved placing the question on the ballot.
Next steps: staff will finalize wording for the ballot and proceed with the printing and postcard/website notifications required before the election.
