Police Chief Unruh told the council the department needs to replace a 2017 Ford Explorer that has logged about 98,351 miles and experienced mounting maintenance problems. Funding for a replacement was included in the FY26–27 budget for $75,000; Berger Chevrolet provided a vehicle-priced quote through a bidding/purchase program for $55,977.
Council member Squires moved to approve the purchase of the 2026 Chevy Tahoe from Berger Chevrolet in the stated amount, and the motion passed by roll call. Chief Unruh also requested authorization to outfit the new Tahoe with lights, sirens, prisoner cargo screens, push bumpers and related equipment; he presented three bids for outfitting and recommended Mid Michigan Emergency Equipment, whose low bid was $18,871.06. Council approved outfitting by roll call. Unruh said some reusable equipment from the decommissioned Explorer (computers) will be repurposed and other parts disposed of; he estimated some small savings if Axon items can be integrated.
Council recorded unanimous yes votes on both motions.
