Sarah Rodgers, Fincastle Branch Manager, told the board June 10 that trustees had divided responsibility for drafting implementation steps for the library istrict's top strategic priorities and had met with assigned managers to produce potential Year 1 goals.
Rodgers said the draft Year 1 activities emphasize auditing current services and collecting baseline data to inform metrics. Examples include assessing early literacy initiatives, measuring program outcomes tied to school readiness, reviewing collection representation and format needs, evaluating community reading engagement, and documenting existing outreach partnerships.
Trustees and staff discussed the strategic priority around information literacy, focusing on how the library might identify recurring patron information needs, track common patron questions, evaluate staff preparedness to address emerging topics (including artificial intelligence), and strengthen both staff and public understanding of information literacy principles. Board members suggested reviewing existing programs and staff training to identify where information-literacy outcomes are already being addressed.
Several trustees cautioned that the draft implementation concepts were ambitious relative to current staff capacity and resources; participants noted overlap among proposed activities across priorities, especially in data collection and measurement. The trustees reached consensus that staff should consolidate the various implementation concepts into a unified Year 1 action plan that identifies key tasks, dependencies, required data collection, and realistic priorities. Rodgers agreed to prepare a consolidated implementation document for board review at a future meeting.
The board did not adopt a final Year 1 plan on June 10; the consolidated document will return to trustees for consideration.
