Jefferson County readies short‑term rental registry; occupancy tax portal to launch June 1

County Treasurer Brian Peck and Deputy Treasurer Melissa VanBrocklin briefed the Jefferson County Finance & Rules Committee on May 26 on the launch of an Occupancy Tax Registry that will include short‑term rentals.
The registry uses a three‑module Granicus system. Peck said the Address Identification and Compliance Monitoring modules have been live since Jan. 21, 2026, and the Registration and Tax Collection module soft‑launched on May 25, with an official launch set for June 1, 2026. The Treasurer’s office will enter a roughly one‑month “hypercare” support period after the June 1 roll‑out to assist registrants and ensure system stability.
The presentation included short‑term rental (STR) statistics the Treasurer’s office compiled using the Granicus tools: 763 distinct STR units currently advertised, 10 new units identified in the past 30 days, 91.7% of units with street addresses identified, and 1,219 total STR listings across multiple websites. Two batches of kickoff letters were sent to property owners on Jan. 22 and March 12, 2026, with another mailing scheduled for late May.
Deputy Treasurer Melissa VanBrocklin walked legislators through the online registration process on the Treasurer’s portal. Under the program described to the committee, all STR owners will be required to register and remit a 3% occupancy tax on gross taxable receipts. The Treasurer’s office said collection, monitoring, and enforcement will be supported by the Granicus system.
The committee also approved a separate resolution authorizing an agreement with Granicus for the short‑term rental and occupancy tax management system. The motion to sponsor and move that resolution was made by Legislator Robert Ferris and seconded by Legislator Steel Potter; the committee agreed to sponsor the resolution as presented.
Next steps: the Treasurer’s office will complete the public launch on June 1, begin the hypercare support phase, and proceed with the planned owner mailings and compliance monitoring described to the committee.
