INDOT 18-month letting list includes signal modernization, pavement striping and bridge work; committee weighs public outreach for signal prioritization

Doug Poad, APC staff, summarized INDOT's 18-month letting list during the Technical Transportation Committee meeting on June 17.

Poad listed upcoming projects: traffic signal modernization at Ross Road, Teal Road and Dale Drive; raised pavement markings on North River Road funded with INDOT safety funds; the second phase of Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) in October following an earlier phase covering signals west of the Wabash River; the second phase for South 9th Street (with the first phase already under construction); bridge work on bridges 64 and 65; and several deck overlays and thin deck overlays.

Committee members discussed how to make the public aware of the signal prioritization project so motorists unfamiliar with the system know that emergency vehicles are approaching and intersections need to be kept clear. David Griffee suggested using social media platforms. Members also discussed whether newer traffic technologies should be included in driver training curricula.

Why it matters: the letting list describes near-term investments that affect traffic operations, roadway safety and bridge condition in Tippecanoe County. Outreach and driver education are likely to affect how the public interacts with signal-priority systems.

Next steps: INDOT and APC staff will continue with scheduled bidding and consider public outreach strategies for EVP and signal modernization projects.
