School board hears progress and lingering costs on athletics, press box and auditorium

Contractors reported interior finishes in many athletic areas are about 98–99% complete. Work at the stadium is ongoing; the project team said deconstruction of the original press box revealed welded connections that made reuse impossible, so the district must add a new steel press box to the contracts. Staff said they found a steel manufacturer willing to supply materials at a lower price but warned the press-box work may take longer than hoped and could affect readiness for some home games.
District presenters also identified finish problems in the new auditorium. Side curtains were ordered and installed at the wrong length; the vendor offered credits covering part of that work. Replacing the main stage curtain in a darker color to match auditorium seating was estimated at about $61,000, and a separate issue involving gray aisle carpet (installed where blue carpet had been expected) carries a similar replacement estimate of roughly $61,000. The presenter said the contractor offered a credit on the carpet line and that the items could be addressed from remaining contingency if the board chose to proceed.
Staff reported that after a bookkeeping review of gross receipts tax placement in the contractor schedule of values, the program-level budgets could be reconciled near the 2022-basis $10 million project amount and still show roughly $226,000 in owner contingency. Project staff urged the board to weigh aesthetic upgrades against contingency and schedule constraints.
Board members asked about installation timing for seat cushions and other finishes; staff said cushions had been ordered, and crews would schedule layout and installation to avoid conflict with athletic events. The district also reviewed options for an indoor athletics facility; bids were slated to open Sept. 4 and a selection committee of board members will likely be formed to evaluate responses.
The board did not record a roll-call vote on curtain or carpet replacements during the transcripted segments; staff said they would return with formal action requests if the board wanted to commit contingency funding or change scope.
