Coralville narrows rec-center design candidates as ICCSD talks continue

Parks and Recreation Director Sherri Proud updated the Coralville City Council on April 14 that the city’s recreation center planning committee reviewed eight requests for qualifications and expects two to three firms to move into the final interview stage.
The update said the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) has continued discussions about a contribution in hopes of preserving the roughly 35‑year relationship under which the city houses ICCSD competitive swim teams for IC West, IC Liberty and middle school squads. City Administrator Kelly Hayworth told the council he has been in discussions with the district superintendent, the chief operating officer and the assistant superintendent about the arrangement.
Proud described elements for the exterior of the proposed building and also outlined additional improvements planned for ST Morrison Park and related concepts for the Coralville Public Library. She said the committee used scoring criteria to evaluate submissions and anticipates selecting two to three finalists for interviews; she did not provide a firm timeline for the interviews or selection.
No formal motions or votes on the project were recorded in the session; officials presented the RFQ results as informational and the council did not adopt any decisions at the meeting. The committee’s short list and next steps in the procurement and interview process are expected to be reported in a later meeting.
