Council approves special-use permit for food mart at 2216–2218 Des Plaines St., subject to conditions

The Blue Island City Council approved a special-use permit for a proposed food mart at 2216–2218 Des Plaines Street, provided the applicant meets several conditions the council and staff outlined during the meeting.

The property owner, who said he has owned the property since 1994 and is transferring the business to associates, told the council he has had a long relationship with city departments and asked for the council’s approval to keep the business operating under new management. “I have been the owner for Blue Island since 1994,” the owner said, recounting years of work in the community.

Council and staff listed conditions the owner must satisfy before the permit is finalized: consult with the building department on repainting the structure, obtain an approved signage permit, repaint the existing fence, replace wall lighting with down lighting, adhere to the stipulated hours of operation (no later than 9 p.m.), and complete required permitting for alarm/ADT systems. The owner explained some sign installation work was pending and asked for latitude while the contractor completes permits.

After discussion the council moved and voted to approve the special-use permit pending full compliance with the requirements identified by planning and building staff. Council members asked the owner to meet with staff (including Mr. Patasko) to confirm the checklist and signage details before leaving the meeting.

The permit approval was conditional; failure to satisfy the listed requirements could delay or void the final permit.
