Marion council approves $1.25 million in payments, picks planner for Comprehensive Plan review

The Town Council of Marion met Feb. 17, 2026, and approved town accounts for payment totaling $1,248,805.85. Dr. Jim Gates moved and Tricia Spencer seconded the accounts motion, which passed 7–0.
The council voted unanimously to engage Mt Rogers Planning District Commission to assist with a Comprehensive Plan review after Director of IT Todd Long reported the review was due and the commission had agreed to help. Larry Carter moved to accept the commission’s assistance; Suzanne Jennings seconded and the motion carried 7–0.
Long also reported that Cameron Wolfe and Bob Ramsey were re-elected as Planning Commission chairman and vice-chairman, respectively.
Council members used the meeting to report on recent Virginia Municipal League sessions. Carter and Vice-Mayor Dr. Jim Gates summarized bills before the General Assembly, noting concerns including sovereign immunity. Mayor Avery Cornett announced an American Legion breakfast scheduled for March 7 and reminded attendees the Health Trust Gala would occur that weekend. Mrs. Suzanne Jennings reported Councilwoman Debra Hayes had undergone surgery and that it had gone well.
The council set a public hearing for March 16, 2026, on two new skill-games requests tied to ownership changes at 234 East Main Street (Exxon) and 611 South Main Street (the Pit Stop). That motion, by Mrs. Jennings and seconded by Ms. Spencer, passed 7–0.
The meeting concluded after a closed-session sequence; the council returned to open session and adjourned at 7:14 p.m.
