School-safety data shows fewer incidents year-over-year; committees report routine capital and policy work
Summary
Director Chivas reported a decline in several SSDS categories for 2025–26 versus 2024–25 (total incidents 23→18; violent incidents 4→1). Committee chairs updated the board on facilities, fixed-asset appraisal, HVAC service agreements and education-committee items such as counseling hours and homeschool athletic eligibility.
Kinnelon’s director of special projects and transportation presented the required twice-yearly School Safety Data System (SSDS) report and said the district recorded fewer total incidents in 2025–26 compared with 2024–25.
"The total incidents went from 23 to 18," Director Chivas told the board, explaining that violent incidents dropped from four to one while vandalism rose from zero to two and confirmed HIV reports fell from 14 to 10. He said the administration will use the reports to identify training needs for students and staff to continue reducing incidents.
Committee chairs also provided briefings. Frank Pepe (finance/facilities/security) outlined summer capital work and funding status; Carl (education) discussed proposed increases to summer counseling hours and home-schooled student athletic eligibility; and Kelly (policy committee) reviewed recent committee topics including HIB, the parental resource toolkit and draft policy revisions.
