Panel approves changes to parking restrictions near former school site

The Public Safety and Welfare panel approved staff’s request to replace school-hours, 5-minute pickup/drop-off signs with plain no-parking signs on blocks around a former school site.

Staff described the request as driven by the school’s absence. The staff member explained that the previously posted signs — which had read no parking with a five-minute pickup window during school hours — now cause confusion because the schools are no longer there. "So, the roads are very narrow out there," the staff member said, adding that parking on both sides can make passage difficult for emergency vehicles.

The staff outlined the geographic coverage for the requested restriction changes: the west side of 32nd Avenue from 58th Street to 55th Street, the east side of 33rd Avenue from 58th Street to 55th Street, the south side of 55th Street from 33rd Avenue to 32nd Avenue, and the north side of 58th Street from 33rd Avenue to 32nd Avenue.

The chair opened the item for public hearing; no members of the public spoke. A motion to approve the signage changes was made, seconded, and approved by voice vote; the chair recorded an aye.
