Board hears recognitions and a curriculum update as district pursues Cognia accreditation and competency-based certification

Mr. Asher presented the Woodford Educational Endowment (WEAF) recognition and invited Silas Hart forward; Hart credited the community origins of the fund. Mr. Wells recognized Sarah Swinford for leadership in school mental-health work; Swinford thanked the board.
Simmons Elementary principal Joe Albert described the school’s adoption of a "house" system intended to build belonging, increase parental volunteerism and tie house points to the district's portrait of a learner. Albert said each house will hold family nights and that the school plans to solicit parent feedback after events.
In a separate curriculum update, Mr. Asher walked the board through the Cognia accreditation cycle and the district’s plan to pursue an add-on certification in competency-based education (CBE) in partnership with CompetencyWorks and the Aurora Institute. He said the district’s six-year review process is underway with the external review scheduled in March; the accreditation fee (about $7,500) has been PO'd and the district will use grant funds for certain travel related to presentations.
The board also approved multiple routine items during the meeting: August financials, personnel notifications, purchase/payment approvals, minutes (with abstentions), a trauma-informed approach plan, calendar-committee membership, creation of middle-school cross-country coaching positions, and an emergency first reading of a toilet-training policy for kindergarten-aged students.
The board heard no public comment at the scheduled time.
