High school near‑completion; board approves sidewalk extension and hears SRO hires sworn in

District facilities and safety topped the Woodford County Board of Education agenda on July 28 as staff reported progress on the high school and outlined pedestrian and security measures.
Mr. Smith, who provided the project update, said the high school's primary building is nearly finished and a certificate of occupancy could be issued by the end of the week if fiber and concession work is completed. He warned the ag barn materials are set to ship Aug. 5, so that structure likely won’t be ready by the Aug. 14 start of school.
On funding, Smith said about $3,328,329 remains in restricted contingency for the high‑school and ag barn projects; those funds are bond‑restricted and cannot be returned to the general fund but may be used for future BG projects.
Sidewalk and safety measures: the board approved a change order to extend a sidewalk from the greenhouse side of the high school to the Tyrone Pike Extension/3‑way stop in front of the middle school. The extension includes a curb cut, ADA ramp, and parking‑lot striping to create a continuous walkway. Board members and a student representative raised pedestrian safety concerns and asked about crossing guards and traffic management; Superintendent Jones and Mr. Smith said the plan avoids routing students across the busiest traffic flow and that SROs and police will be part of arrival/dismissal traffic plans. The sidewalk motion passed 5–0.
School resource officers: Chief Sutton reported the district hired two SROs to ensure an officer in every building from day one of school. He introduced the new officers and administered standard oath language; officer paperwork was signed accordingly. The hires were presented as a step to provide consistent law‑enforcement presence and to coordinate with Versailles police and other partners.
What’s next: staff will complete remaining punch‑list items to obtain the certificate of occupancy, finish ag barn permitting and material delivery, implement traffic/arrival plans with SROs and police, and post sidewalk construction scheduling for community awareness.
