Richland County approves one-month salary overlap for Extension Office ahead of retirement

County Extension agents presented a staffing plan at the Richland County Board of Commissioners meeting on Oct. 7 that includes a one-month salary overlap to cover an upcoming retirement.
County Extension Agents Lacy Christopher and Ronda Gripentrog told the board the proposal would require paying two positions for one month in 2026 but that the department projects a net savings of more than $15,000 annually after 2026 as a result of the staffing change. Gripentrog described the overlap and the expected first‑year offset to the commissioners.
Commissioner Nathan Berseth moved to approve the one‑month overlap, Commissioner Terry Goerger seconded the motion, and the board voted unanimously to adopt the plan. The motion does not change any other budget line items reported at the meeting; staff said the overlap expense would be offset in the first year.
The board did not set a separate effective date beyond the 2026 timing described by extension staff. The next Richland County Commission meeting is scheduled for Oct. 21.
