Separately, the commission voted unanimously to promote Assistant Police Chief John Giles to chief of police. The motion, moved by Mayor Jones and seconded by Commissioner Cody Meadows, passed 4–0. Giles is scheduled to be sworn in July 1 at 6 p.m.
The commission did not provide further details about the reasons discussed in the closed session. The meeting record notes the personnel discussion was the basis for the appointments; no disciplinary actions or removals were recorded in the public minutes.
The commission also discussed administrative matters related to Alcoholic Beverage Control duties, including creating .gov email addresses for Ethics and ABC administration and approving monthly pay for the Primary ABC Administrator. Those items were handled separately.
