Public commenter urges parent-led bullying committee; board approves committees and moves to closed session for hires

A member of the public used the delegation period to welcome the new superintendent and raise three items: reuse of a school building (suggesting carpentry support from ANTC), gaps in bus-driver first‑responder training and a proposal to form a parents' committee to address bullying. The commenter described asking three bus drivers about first‑responder training and found one fully certified, one with haphazard training and one unaware that a policy existed, and asked the board to verify that all bus drivers are required and certified for first‑responder training.

The board then handled several action items: it unanimously approved the math textbook adoption committee membership (materials are on display at the school board office for public review) and approved the superintendent's listed travel to conferences and Region 8 meetings. Trustees also tentatively moved the September meeting to Sept. 18 so members could support a Sept. 11 military appreciation event, a change the board approved by vocal assent with one member recorded as "present."

At the end of open session the board voted to convene a closed meeting pursuant to Code of Virginia §2.2‑3711(A)(1) to consider specific personnel matters. The chair read a roster of proposed actions to be considered in closed session, including multiple appointments (assistant principals, teachers, coaches, director of exceptional education and special programs, supervising mentor, and other positions), five resignations, one retirement, reclassifications, contract changes (11‑month contract) and salary adjustments; the roster also named consideration of the Nottoway Intermediate and Middle School principal positions. The board then entered closed session.
