Nottoway says Renew America school grant totals $12.16 million; phase two waiting on DOE

Ms. Meyer, representing the division, told the board that Nottoway is one of 24 selectees in the first round of Renew America School Grant awards and that the district received a $12,163,600 award with a required cost share of $662,900 funded from state construction funds. She said budget period 1 was completed March 31 and included exterior-door replacements at Crewe Primary and Nottoway Intermediate and LED lighting retrofits in every school and many parking areas.

Ms. Meyer said the second budget period remains "in limbo," explaining, "Our application to continue into that is sitting on the secretary of the Department of Energy's desk," and the division is awaiting permission to proceed. If approved, the next phase would replace failing HVAC units (noted as roughly 15 years old) at multiple buildings, repair a leaking flat roof section, replace window systems at Nottoway Intermediate, and update VAV boxes and air handlers in other areas.

She told trustees the division has seen energy-use reductions from the completed work, replaced collapsed geothermal wells at Crewe Primary with a boiler, and is continuing to seek federal reimbursements for prior expenditures (with assistance from Congressman McGuire’s office). The board did not take a formal vote on the grant status but noted the fiscal and operational steps required should budget period 2 be approved.
