Maiden Rock board accepts Pierce County rock bid for road work; potential buyer seeks discontinuance of 440th Street

The Town of Maiden Rock Board on Monday approved a contract for road rock and discussed a resident's request to begin the discontinuance-of-maintenance process on 440th Street.
Supervisor John Danneker moved to accept the Pierce County Highway bid for road rock at $10.92 per ton; Chairman Jerry F. Duden seconded the motion and, with both board members present voting in favor, the motion carried. The board had received an alternate bid from Greg Bechel Trucking at $11.75 and $12.50 per ton.
The decision directs staff to proceed with procurement using the Pierce County Highway bid and to schedule the work for the sections identified by the clerk and road liaison. The board also discussed several other road maintenance matters: the first round of mowing is complete; culverts on 145th Street will be replaced with work contracted to Elbe's; and rock application is planned this year for 76th Street near M. Collett and 100th Avenue near D. Iverson. A bent sign at 50th and 250th will be followed up by Cole Kangas.
Separately, resident and potential buyer Dylan Holes told the board he is willing to begin the town's discontinuing maintenance process for 440th Street if the board supports that course of action. The board indicated its support at the meeting and will proceed with the next steps for a formal discontinuance process.
Clerk/Treasurer Carla R. Schuster used the meeting to announce administrative items and incoming correspondence, including an ambulance award from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and other county and DOT program notices. Schuster also offered public thanks to Joseph Smith and Cole Kangas: "HUGE thanks to Joseph Smith and Cole Kangas for assisting me with clerical and driving services while I recuperated from surgery." Public commenter Judy Krohn complimented Supervisor Danneker on arranging water testing and said residents should have received their results. When a question was raised about responsibility for a stretch identified as CC and 50th, the clerk said the county is responsible for that section.
The board approved the June 2025 minutes and accepted the June 2025 treasurer's report earlier in the meeting. The board deferred a resolution concerning authority bonds for business loans for further review with attorney Bob Loberg and listed that resolution, parking-lot blade-patching bids and plan commission/OOSC items on next month's agenda.
