Sandy Springs begins repairs on Roberts Drive after hydrant hit causes roadway collapse

A vehicle struck a fire hydrant late Monday, July 13, on Roberts Drive in Sandy Springs, sending water across the roadway and causing part of the street to collapse, city officials said.

City of Sandy Springs crews, coordinated with the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management, responded to isolate the damaged section of the water main, restore the hydrant and return water service to nearby homes before beginning road reconstruction.

The collapse required reconstruction of the roadway and underlying utilities rather than only replacing the hydrant, according to the statement. Repairs on the site are expected to take about a week, though officials warned that weather could affect the paving schedule.

Motorists are being asked to follow posted detours and check the City of Sandy Springs’ social media channels for updates. Crews worked to both protect the repair area and restore service to affected residences.
