Parents and trustees spent substantial time on the district’s athletic operations, with several parents describing inconsistent meal provisions, confusing travel schedules and unclear lines of responsibility between coaches and the athletic director.
A parent described multiple tournament‑time problems, including days when players were left to provide their own lunch during multi‑day events: “For track, during tournament time, lunches were not provided, and they stayed in a hotel that did not have free breakfast,” the parent said, urging clearer communication about who arranges meals and whether coaches receive per‑diems or a budget for food.
Staff acknowledged the problems and said some issues stemmed from a change in scheduling systems and other logistics. “It has been an absolute fiasco,” a staff member said, describing last year’s tournament season and saying that per diems are included in coaches’ contracts but that operational details need to be cleaned up.
Trustees moved to appoint Shane Brown as athletic director; the motion was seconded and carried. Board discussion then turned to whether to advertise or hire an assistant athletic director. Several trustees said they preferred to wait until the conclusion of negotiations so the budget picture is clearer; a motion to table consideration of an assistant AD was offered.
Board members asked staff to present a clearer delineation of AD vs. coach responsibilities and to identify tasks that could be reassigned or supported to reduce the AD’s workload. Trustees also asked staff to return with budget options and a timeline for whether and when an assistant could be funded.
Next steps: the district will bring a clearer job‑scope for the AD to the next meeting and report back on budget availability after negotiations.
