Superintendent outlines kindergarten boot camp, staggered start and Aug. 15 back-to-school rally

Superintendent Del Flor told the Maple Heights City School District Board on July 13 that the district began a state-funded "kindergarten boot camp" that day to assess incoming kindergartners and familiarize families with school buildings. "So today was the first day for that," Del Flor said, and she added the boot-camp sessions will run through Aug. 6.
Del Flor said the district finished summer school the week of July 4 and outlined the opening calendar for staff and students: staff orientation begins around Aug. 11, most students will start Monday, Aug. 24, and pre-K and kindergarten will use a staggered start to ease the transition. "Teachers will be able to work with the students, get a feel for what levels they're on," she said.
The superintendent also announced a back-to-school rally scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15 at the high school featuring free activities, giveaways and community partners. In response to a board question about boot-camp enrollment, Del Flor said the program was full at "about 70" students.
The board received the update during the meeting's district-reporting portion and took no formal vote on the calendar items during the public session.
