Ely Planning and Zoning adopts single mailed notice with online packet for hearings

Planning and Zoning Administrator Scott Kochendorfer told the Ely City Planning and Zoning Commission on May 20 that the city will change how it distributes planning hearing materials to reduce postage costs.
Kochendorfer said the city will continue to send the single notice letter required by law to neighbors within 350 feet of a proposal but will supply the full information packet online and make printed copies available at City Hall upon request. "The information packets are good and include a lot of information, but with postage so expensive, they are costing the city a lot of money," he said. He noted this mirrors the process used by St. Louis County for similar notices.
The commission voted to adopt the new procedure on a motion by Commissioner Palcher, seconded by Commissioner Heil; the motion carried without objection. Under the new process, neighbors will receive the single mailed notice and a link to the packet; a printed packet may be requested from City Hall.
The change aims to save postage while preserving neighbors' access to documents. The commission did not specify estimated savings at the meeting. The protocol includes continuing to honor requests for printed packets and citing legal requirements for the mailed notice.
