At the Feb. 5 City Council meeting the body recognized Councilmember Rufus Stewart with a Georgia Municipal Association Lifetime Service Award for 35 years of public service.
Rashida Cloud, representing the Georgia Municipal Association, presented the award and highlighted Stewart’s long service and leadership. "Elected in 1989 with consistent service through the end of 2025, council member Rufus Stewart has strengthened the city of McDonough through economic development, improved public service, and youth mentorship," Cloud said. Stewart accepted brief remarks, saying, "May the work I done speak for me," and thanked the community.
The recognition was part of the celebration of long-serving officials during Black History Month and drew applause from the dais. The presentation was ceremonial; no council action was required.
