The City Council voted to authorize on‑site paving to install five poured-asphalt speed tables on Lakemont Drive, a stretch leading to Southern Crescent College, at a cost not to exceed $28,375. The motion passed with 6 votes in favor and 1 abstention.
Public Works staff explained that speed tables — poured asphalt features — are more durable than rubber speed bumps and can last 20 to 30 years, making them a longer-term investment despite a higher up-front cost. Staff noted that three of the previously proposed rubber speed bumps were required across the road width, so five tables would achieve comparable traffic-calming coverage. Council members questioned whether installing asphalt tables near college traffic sets a new standard for other neighborhoods and asked how the city would handle previously approved rubber speed bumps in other subdivisions when they reach end of life.
Council approved the project with funding coming from the specified SPLOST/FLoss account. Staff said traffic studies identified Lakemont Drive as the observed problem corridor and that the tables address public safety concerns from high-speed approaches to the college. The city will phase additional neighborhood traffic studies as requested.
