The Norwalk City School District board on July 14 approved a resolution to lease district property to the Norwalk High School Athletic Boosters, enabling a privately funded indoor athletic facility on the high school campus.
Boosters representatives told the board that construction contracts and final plans are signed, a turf product was chosen, and the project is close to fully funded — they estimated approximately $150,000 remained to complete the fundraising. Those representatives said the project would triple the size of the current indoor facility, add playing surfaces adaptable for multiple sports and include later additions such as a running lane.
Boosters outlined a planned groundbreaking tied to mandatory parent meetings on July 29 and said excavation and on-site activity could begin the first week in August. According to the booster presentation, turf installation could start in November, with the facility possibly ready for student use by Christmas, depending on installer schedules.
Board members praised the boosters' fundraising and noted the project is privately funded; boosters emphasized ongoing maintenance planning and a desire to keep a reserve from original funds for future maintenance and equipment replacement.
A motion to approve the lease was moved, seconded and carried by unanimous roll call (Mister Norris, Missus Burkett, Missus Crawford, Mister Gonzales and Mister Ritzenthaler voted yes).
