Eagle River council hears report on wastewater compliance and opts to maintain fluoride at current level

Eagle River Light & Water staff presented the 2025 Compliance Maintenance Annual Report for the wastewater system and updated the Common Council on water fluoridation and sludge disposal efforts on June 9.
Utility representative Mike Sanborn described the annual compliance summary for wastewater and said the city will bring a resolution to council in July for formal acceptance of the report card. Sanborn also asked the council for feedback on whether to stop fluoridation of the municipal water supply and provided a written pros-and-cons summary for council review.
Amy Springer of the Vilas County Health Department advised that fluoridation provides public-health benefits and recommended continuing the current practice. Council members indicated they were comfortable maintaining the current fluoride dosing level at 0.7 mg/L and took no action to discontinue fluoridation. Sanborn additionally reported the utility is working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on approval to spread treated sludge on private landowners’ acreage as part of the solids-management approach.
