Board amends educational consultant contract to one year; fluoride offering clarified

The Upper Adams board amended a proposed two‑year educational consultant agreement with Mrs. Brewer to a one‑year term after a motion from a board member to allow the administration to seek additional providers and reconsider the matter next school year.
A board member who moved the amendment explained the intent as giving administration time to solicit additional proposals and noted three priorities for fiscal decisions: compliance with mandates, the good of students and fiscal responsibility. "My understanding is that there were a number of different providers that could have provided details, but didn't," the member said while urging a one‑year term so alternatives could be considered.
Members also discussed whether fluoride services included in the proposal would be provided as a district‑wide program or offered individually. Administration confirmed fluoride could be provided via permission forms and on an individual basis depending on insurance access and parental consent; the amendment would not change that provision and would only change the contract term if the amendment passed.
The amendment was seconded and carried on a roll call vote. Board members said they wanted transparency and asked that the supporting materials be posted for the public and corrected if errors were found.
The consultant contract as amended will be brought back if administration recommends continuing the service into a subsequent year, the board said.
