Mister Cockrell summarized the request as the final approval following a preliminary vote. He said the company currently has about 40 employees and is seeking to expand its capacity and workforce; Scantia’s representatives estimated the project would add roughly 30 jobs and include capital investment to expand the building. The abatement request is for a standard multi-year schedule that reduces the real-estate tax burden over time, the presenters said.
Why it matters: County leaders and business advocates told the council the abatement is intended to keep jobs in Monroe County and encourage private investment. Clark Griner, interim CEO of the Bloomington Economic Development Corporation, spoke in favor of the request and described Scantia’s hiring and security vetting as consistent with county economic goals.
Councilors asked routine questions and held a public hearing that was opened and closed during the meeting. No members of the public objected during the hearing; a company representative said the Latin pronunciation of the firm’s name was discussed in lighter moments at the podium.
The council voted by roll call to approve the abatement; recording of the vote shows the motion passed unanimously. The action follows an earlier preliminary approval and moves the project toward implementation in Monroe County.
