The Morrison County Board of Adjustment on July 7 approved a variance permitting Ryan and Caitlin Strandberg to separate their residence from a tier‑2 dairy feedlot and retain the home on a five‑acre parcel while the contiguous feedlot operation is sold. Land services staff told the board the dairy farm sits on about 70.59 acres and that the nearest animal holding area is approximately 125 feet from the home, short of the 660‑foot setback normally required for a non‑feedlot residence adjacent to a tier‑2 feedlot.
Applicants said they plan to sell the farm operation but want to retain their home; a prospective buyer in the audience indicated willingness to work with the arrangement. Board members discussed practical difficulty, potential alternatives such as life estates, reciprocal setbacks and easement arrangements for shared septic, and the long‑standing farm context. Several members emphasized that variances run with the land and that any future expansions or changes in feedlot tier would trigger permitting or new variance needs.
Clint moved to approve the variance after the findings were read; Greg seconded. The board voted to approve the variance. Land services staff instructed applicants on next steps, including working on any necessary easements or agreements for shared utilities.
